How to distinguish the "twins" of rfid active and passive tags

August 15,2023.

We all know rfid tags, but we don't know that they can be divided into active rfid tags and passive rfid tags according to whether they are equipped with batteries. The two are like "twins". So how can we distinguish the pair of "twins"? Today, the editor will take you to see the difference between rfid active tags and passive tags, as well as their respective advantages and disadvantages.

1. The difference between RFID active tags and passive tags
1. There is a difference in concept:
1) Active RFID, also known as active RFID, is divided according to the power supply method of the tag, and usually supports long-distance identification. The active electronic tag is equipped with a battery for power supply, and does not need the reader to provide energy. The cost is high and the life is short. After the energy is exhausted, the battery needs to be replaced.

2) Passive RFID, that is, passive radio frequency tags adopt frequency hopping working mode and have anti-interference ability. Users can customize the reading and writing of standard data. It is more efficient in special application systems, and the reading distance can reach more than 10 meters. There is no battery in the passive RFID tag, the cost is very low and it has a long service life, and the reading and writing distance is closer than that of the active tag.

2. The working principles of the two are different
Active RFID tags mean that the energy for the tag's work is provided by the battery. The battery, memory and antenna together form an active electronic tag, which is different from the passive radio frequency activation method. Before the battery is replaced, the information is sent out through the set frequency band.

The performance of passive RFID tags is greatly affected by tag size, modulation form, circuit Q value, device power consumption, and modulation depth. Passive radio frequency tags have a memory capacity of 1024bits and an ultra-wide operating frequency band, which not only complies with relevant industry regulations, but also enables flexible development and application, and can read and write multiple tags at the same time. Passive radio frequency tag design, no battery required, memory can be rewritten more than 100,000 times.

Second, the advantages and disadvantages of both
Active RFID tags are powered by built-in batteries, and different tags use different numbers and shapes of batteries.

Advantages: Long working distance, the distance between the active RFID tag and the RFID reader can reach tens of meters, or even hundreds of meters.

Disadvantages: bulky, high cost, use time is limited by battery life.

There is no battery in the passive rfid tag, and its power is obtained from the RFID reader. When the passive RFID tag is close to the RFID reader, the antenna of the passive RFID tag converts the received electromagnetic wave energy into electrical energy, activates the chip in the RFID tag, and sends out the data in the RFID chip.

Advantages: small size, light weight, low cost, long life, can be made into different shapes such as thin sheets or hanging buckles, and used in different environments.

Disadvantages: Since there is no internal power supply, the distance between the passive RFID tag and the RFID reader is limited, usually within a few meters, and generally requires a higher-power RFID reader.

Every pair of twins in the world looks the same, but they are different, and so are rfid tags. RFID active tags and passive tags have different characteristics and use scenarios. We can use them according to different scenario requirements.
