RFID helps the rapid development of IoT applications

July 19,2022.

RFID technology plays a pivotal role in the development of the Internet of Things, which is mainly reflected in the perception layer of the Internet of Things. This article focuses on the following industries as examples:

Transportation
In the field of transportation, RFID is most commonly used in the ETC system that people often refer to. The ETC system is the so-called "non-stop charging system", which can realize automatic charging without stopping the vehicle. The ETC system combines modern communication technology, electronic technology, automatic control technology, computer and network technology and other high-tech-oriented technologies. When the RFID tag installed on the vehicle is close to the range of the ETC reader (usually 1-10 meters), The ETC reader emits a microwave query signal. After the RFID tag on the vehicle receives the query signal from the reader, it will reflect the signal and the data information of the electronic tag itself (such as high-speed mileage, vehicle information, etc.) back to the card to read. in the device. The biggest advantage of this is that it reduces the trouble of manual charging, improves the efficiency of vehicle customs clearance, and avoids the trouble of traffic jams.

Medical field
The application of RFID in the hospital information system will significantly improve the operation efficiency of hospital assets and the level of medical services. The application in the following aspects is relatively mature: First, the management of the pharmaceutical supply chain, RFID tags can identify physical objects at any moment in the manufacturing and distribution process. It can help pharmaceutical companies to produce more kinds of more complex products in small batches, and monitor drugs at all nodes in the supply chain, including accurate target batches, so as to reduce medical problems, and once problems occur Better traceability of drugs; second, medical monitoring, the hospital will wear a wrist tag for each patient. Medical staff only need to scan the label information with a handheld reader to know the patient information, and the rescue of emergency patients will not be delayed, and there will be no medical accidents caused by misidentification of the wounded. In the case of patient transfer, etc., the transmission of patient information can also be achieved without error; the third is the application of tracking and positioning of important assets and materials of the hospital. Large medical centers generally have huge storage bases for important medical assets and medical materials. Need to find the right item from thousands of supplies according to the order. The use of RFID tags will make this search and verification process extremely fast and accurate, and the tags themselves can carry item-related information, which can increase the speed of the entire verification process by about 20 times.

Logistics field
The entire logistics system is closely related to RFID from the labeling of goods into the warehouse in the early stage, the inventory count in the mid-term, and the out-of-warehouse allocation in the later stage. For example, when new goods are labeled into the warehouse, the unique ID number or written data of the electronic label can be analogous to the "ID number" of the goods. The data includes the name of the goods, the time of purchase, the warehouse to which they belong, and the attributes of the goods. People only need to hold the reader to scan the code to read the cargo information. This process also saves a lot of time for inventory counts. The staff only needs to hold the reader for regular inventory, read the cargo label information at close range, and compare it with the background management system to know whether the cargo information is consistent with the background system. The system information can be corrected on the spot. Similarly, when the goods are out of the warehouse, the RFID reader of the exit gate reads the goods label to obtain the out-of-warehousing information, and verifies whether the product batch number and storage location listed in the shipped product and the out-of-warehousing document are correct. After leaving the warehouse, if there is any problem with the goods in the future, it can also be traced to the source to find out what problems have occurred before the goods are delivered to the user.
